"Teacher, you said that students nowadays are not serious in class and are all looking at their mobile phones. But in the past, students were secretly reading novels or comics in class, so wouldn't they be more serious in this way?" "Teacher, you said We Internet natives all regard our mobile phones as pacifiers, and we have to play mobile games and update updates from time to time. However, when you adults pick up your mobile phones and play Pokémon, your enthusiasm is not inferior to ours. have , you see, many teachers take out their mobile phones immediately after class, and even look at their mobile phones while eating like students! "Teacher, the Greek philosopher Aristotle, also said that poetry is better than poetry. Is history more real? If poetry that represents art is more real than history that describes reality, then it’s not wrong for us to read anime and light novels on our mobile phones. The characters in anime are more human than the ugly people in reality. !”
Today, when the Internet has become highly popularized, we can already see a large number of discussions and fierce criticisms of how the Internet harms people's bodies and minds. Especially when we see that digital natives never leave their hands on their phones whether they are in class, walking, waiting for the bus, eating, partying or even sleeping, we become even more convinced that it is this digital virtual world that is constantly in use. It corrodes and corrupts the human heart.
However, what is annoying is that even though many discussions continue to point out through rational analysis and scientific research that the high degree of Internetization in daily life will bring various disadvantages and harms, it is still difficult for digital aborigines to construct structures with network technology. In the virtual world, keep a safe distance; sometimes, you will even be refuted by the indigenous people until you are speechless.
But if you think about it carefully, the specious arguments of the indigenous people are not completely unreasonable. Before the advent of Internet technology, didn't printed novels and animations also create virtual worlds that made many people forget about food and sleep and become crazy, attracting many people to rush into it? ! Even in religious beliefs, they try their best to show their believers a virtual world that is different from reality, such as heaven, holy land, pure land... Even if they can neither see nor touch it, aren't believers willing to sacrifice everything in the hope of entering that ethereal world in the future? The desire for, construction of, and indulgence in the virtual world obviously stems from the natural needs of the human spirit and emotion, rather than a rational calculation of gains and losses.
Therefore, the purpose of this course is no longer to criticize Internet technology, but to explore from a larger perspective: What kind of spiritual and emotional power is driving people to build various virtual worlds, including the Internet world? What kind of problems exist in the real world that make people find ways to escape, even just for a moment? And these virtual worlds can really allow people to transcend the reality they hate, or are they consolidating reality without realizing it? Can they make their lives more powerful and more able to withstand reality, or can they make them less resistant to stress? , even more vulnerable?
This course plan combines knowledge from different fields to discuss in depth the nature of various virtual worlds such as religion, stories, games, animation, etc., as well as people's love and hatred for these worlds. I hope that students who take the course can better understand themselves and the society they live in, and then consciously and gradually change their relationship with the online world.
