Emotions in Social life

Course Target

(This course outline is tentative, please refer to the teacher’s first class handout as a basis) sociology of emotions Sociology of Emotion Class time: Friday morning 9:00-12:00 SS209 Teacher: Zheng Feiwen / Office Hour: Thursday 2:00-3:00 pm In the field of sociology, the topic of "emotion" has not received considerable attention. Among the existing sociological theories, sociology related to emotions generally include Goffman's interaction theory, sociological research on the body, Hochschild's emotional labor, and themes related to women's emotionality, stigma, shame, or hysteria in feminist research. Facing the increasingly complex modern/postmodern society, what emotional problems do people have today? How to solve it? This course cuts into today's interdisciplinary fields such as sociology and cultural studies. On the one hand, this course will analyze the "social facts" of collective emotions in society from the perspective of the sociology of emotions. On the other hand, we will analyze the "social emotions" from the perspective of "social emotions". Investigate "emotional"/psychological qualities. Discussions about emotions seem to be experiences in the private domain, but from a sociological analysis point of view, we will find that private emotions are often related to collective consciousness, political identity, and the public domain. For example, Raymond Williams mentioned the "emotional structure" of culture (the structure of feeling), collective violence, national identity, and collective trauma, or melancholy related to modernity, modern people's view of love, desire in consumer society, etc. . What is the relationship between personal emotions and social emotions? How do we move individuals and society toward the ultimate goal of being "happier"? What is the source of human suffering? This course analyzes this issue from social phenomena, sociology and interdisciplinary perspectives. Divided into four parts: 1. Human desires under capitalist consumer culture. In an era of overflowing mass media and information, how does media and advertising consumption affect our emotions? What are some related to addiction? 2. The relationship between emotion and labor. 3. How do we react when we watch others suffer? How do we think about the relationship between others and our own pain? 4. Social Emotions: How do emotions of desire, anger, jealousy, and compassion arise? Social Emotionality: Exploring Emotional Blackmail, Addiction, and the Philosophy of Mind in Ancient Indian Philosophy. This part will introduce the relationship between "mindfulness" psychology, which has been popular in Western psychology circles in recent years, and Eastern Indian philosophy, and explore how different philosophical systems explain and propose solutions to human suffering. Private emotional experience cannot be completely reduced to the collective or public field. However, the psychological states such as jealousy, anger, anxiety, fear, desire, and addiction that humans will face when growing up will be affected by the collective environment and family environment. influence. Personal emotions interact with physical disease states, and emotions can cause chronic diseases. What exactly is this mutual influence? We will choose two topics of "Social Emotional Science" to discuss: 1. Addiction: addiction to the Internet, food or consumer desires. 2. Anger. 3. Emotional blackmail.
