Seminar on Sociology Graduate Career

Course Target

The outside world has some contradictory stereotypes about graduates from the Department of Social Sciences, such as being good at everything and being lax in everything, having no expertise and can only work in insurance and take civil service examinations, and only criticizing society and protesting on the streets... These stereotypes are reasonable, but they are only a few of the many appearances of sociology graduates, and they are also a few appearances that are common in many disciplines. The reasons for the misunderstanding mainly come from three characteristics of sociological training. First, diversity in the field of sociology. Sociology has different sub-fields, and most sociologists only specialize in a few sub-fields. Therefore, the career plans of sociology students are usually affected by the expertise of the faculty and curriculum characteristics of the department, and they may find their way out in specific directions such as human resource management, health care services, cultural and creative undertakings, social enterprises, non-profit undertakings, social initiatives, or public education personnel. Secondly, the fundamentals of sociology core training. The core training in sociology focuses on the abilities of observation, analysis, discussion, communication and critical thinking. These basic abilities do not have clear corresponding career options, but they are an important condition for improving other professional abilities. Moreover, there is a general lack of training due to academic advancement and technical-vocational orientation, so there is a contradictory impression of being able to do everything but specialize in nothing. Third, the universality of sociological knowledge. Sociological knowledge mainly involves people's social nature. This kind of knowledge is the basic quality required by many industries and occupations that have no special threshold and are related to people. Therefore, sociology is a required subject in the social and administrative civil service examination; many technology companies have also begun to recruit graduates in sociology, anthropology and other humanities and social science fields.
However, graduates from the sociology department usually have a period of experience in the workplace before they can understand the implications of the characteristics of sociology training for their careers through review and reflection. In the process of university training, I always feel confused due to the lack of clear workplace correspondence, which in turn affects my motivation to learn. The best way to understand what you can do after graduating from a sociology major is to look at what sociology students do after graduation. The career experiences shared by graduates of the Department of Sociology have become the best reference for career planning. In view of this, the Department of Social Sciences requested the assistance of the Department Alumni Association to teach the "Acacia Forest Career Lectures" course. Through curriculum-based career lectures, students can gain exposure to the experiences of department friends with different career development. With the help of sharing from department friends from different generations and different career fields, we can help current students find the direction to settle down and make a living.
