自先秦時期開始，德治一直以來都是儒家的政治理想。到了清末民初，文化與國家的救亡圖存意識迫使儒者反省傳統道德政治模型的有效性與可行性。當代新儒家對此反省最為深刻，他們認為傳統儒家政治哲學應該進行創造性的轉化，最終可以開出（證成）民主政治。本課程以當代新儒家的政治哲學為焦點，透過對比反對儒家接受民主的傳統主義者以及反傳統的自由民主派等立場，放置在更大的論述脈絡中理解這種創造性的轉化。同學透過此課程可以達成以下具體目標，第一，掌握當代新儒家政治哲學中的基本概念；第二，在閱讀討論過程中重述不同哲學立場；第三，強化理解、分析與批判之能力。為了達成上述目標，學生的課前準備以及出席上課就是必要的，課前準備包括花時間閱讀、註記、提問，出席課堂主要是聆聽與參與討論，將課前準備應用在討論上。
Since the pre-Qin period, rule by virtue has always been a Confucian political ideal. By the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, the awareness of cultural and national salvation forced Confucian scholars to reflect on the effectiveness and feasibility of the traditional moral and political model. Contemporary New Confucians have the most profound reflection on this. They believe that traditional Confucian political philosophy should be creatively transformed, and ultimately democratic politics can be formulated (justified). This course focuses on the political philosophy of contemporary Neo-Confucianism. By comparing the positions of traditionalists who oppose Confucian acceptance of democracy and anti-traditional liberal democrats, it places it in a larger context to understand this creative transformation. Students can achieve the following specific goals through this course: first, master the basic concepts in contemporary New Confucian political philosophy; second, restate different philosophical positions during reading and discussion; third, strengthen the ability to understand, analyze, and criticize. In order to achieve the above goals, students' pre-class preparation and attendance in class are necessary. Pre-class preparation includes spending time reading, taking notes, and asking questions. Class attendance mainly involves listening and participating in discussions, and applying pre-class preparations to discussions.
