(Marcus Tullius Cicero, January 3, 106 BC – December 7, 43 BC)"Introduction to Literature" is a compulsory introductory course for all Chinese students to enter the world of literature. It naturally has a stepping stone meaning: it is hoped that through such a course, students can have a preliminary understanding of what literature is, and besides being a purely enjoyable reader How else can we gain insight into the subtle and rich codes hidden in each text?
Let students understand "what literature is" - such a broad teaching goal is actually not easy to achieve. The difficulties include: If literature is a university subject, how can we explain it clearly through an "introduction"? As for switching from entertainment reading to serious reading, will it destroy our original pure enthusiasm for literature?
In fact, "What is literature?" should be the first question that Chinese Department students ask themselves after entering this department; and you will answer this question through the next four years, or even your whole life: What is literature? What does it mean to you "yourself"? Only by reading more and more works and accumulating more life experiences can you slowly come up with your own thoughts on this issue; or as your life experiences change and your vision changes, The way you answer this question is different at every stage of life. And this process of continuous exploration and thinking is like experiencing one gorgeous adventure after another in the literary world. At this moment, the journey is about to begin. The courses of this semester will continue the planning and arrangement of the previous semester, still focusing on the reading of literary works, and at the same time, the analysis and introduction of text-related literary theory and literary historical background will be introduced.
The types of texts we will read together this semester are modern novels and dramas; compared to poetry, novels and dramas carry richer literary techniques, thematic connotations, and contemporary significance. They are also the text types favored by many students. Therefore, we look forward to having more exciting and lively discussions in this semester’s classroom, which will continue to ignite students’ enthusiasm for literature.
As the introduction to literature course comes to the next semester, I still want to remind students that in the four years of the Chinese Department of the university, in addition to learning to slowly become a professional reader, but before that, you must first/always be a Readers who enjoy reading. All theories and knowledge not only hope to lead us to better understand and appreciate the profound connotations hidden in literary works at different levels, but also to practice the beautiful reading process again and again, and let it inspire us in our lives. Different auras. As Cicero said in Roman times:
"We should spend our lives together in literary pursuits. Words were our pastime; now they are our safe haven."
