Course Target

Think: A Compelling Introduction to Philosophy This course uses Simon Blackburn's Think: A Compelling Introduction to Philosophy (1999) to understand some of the most popular themes in Western philosophy: knowledge, reason, truth, mind, freedom, destiny, identity, and God. , goodness, and justice, etc. Blackburn believes that when ordinary people think of philosophy, they often think of it as impractical, otherworldly, and weird; and when philosophy teachers or philosophy students are asked what they are doing, they may find it difficult to answer. , thus experiencing a period of awkward silence. Blackburn positions philosophers as conceptual engineers. Just as scientists study the structure of matter, philosophers study the structure of ideas: Our concepts or ideas construct a house of the mind, and we live in it. If we understand the structure of a thing It involves understanding how its parts work and how the parts relate to each other. Then, by understanding concepts or ideas and the relationships between them, we can understand our worldview. Blackburn's book does not assume that the reader has a sufficient philosophical background. He attempts to explain the above topics in a popular and friendly way. Regardless of whether we have a background in philosophy or not, after reading this book, we may be able to more easily answer what philosophy is and what people who read philosophy do.
