本課程為加強認識漢字而設，是文字學後的一門進階課程，但講授方式仍是以導讀為主線。教授內容以篆文以前的文體為主，如殷周的甲骨、兩周的金文、春秋、戰國的帛書、竹簡等。每年選取不同的專門文字加以討論，由考字、通讀、了解句法，以至印證歷史，並教授治學的方法。
課程強調古漢字辨認的討論，分析漢字的字原。在求真、求實證的訓練下，對強化同學的思辨、建立專業自信有重要而積極的幫助。This course is designed to enhance the understanding of Chinese characters. It is an advanced course after learning Chinese characters, but the teaching method is still based on guided reading. The teaching content is mainly based on the styles before seal script, such as oracle bones from the Yin and Zhou Dynasties, bronze inscriptions from the Zhou Dynasty, silk scripts from the Spring and Autumn Period, and the Warring States Period, bamboo slips, etc. Each year, different specialized texts are selected for discussion, ranging from character testing, thorough reading, understanding of syntax, to corroborating history, and teaching methods of scholarship.
The course emphasizes the discussion of ancient Chinese character recognition and analysis of the origins of Chinese characters. Under the training of seeking truth and evidence, it has important and positive help to strengthen students' thinking and build professional confidence.
1、本課程為研究所專業課程，主要培育研究生對傳統小學的認識、方法的掌握和批判能力的建立。課程由上古文字的了解，深入討論殷商以迄兩周社會文化，從而了解中國文化的源頭，本課程希望在方法學和地下材料兩方面，充份掌握古文字的相關知識，幫助同學對古書有進一步的認識。
2、由於近年古文字的大量出土，古文字本身已成為一獨立研究的顯學。本課程作為培育文字學家的一門基本訓練課程，提供同學對研究文字的客觀方法和途逕。
