教育目標 Course Target

1. Course Description:

Students will read a variety of American poetry as an authentic language text in order to A) build a knowledge of expressive English vocabulary familiarize themselves with the literary genre of poetry and how to interpret it; develop C) basic language skills (i.e. reading, writing, listening and speaking); D) improve language areas (i.e. vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation); E) gain exposure, experience and practice with creative individual expression through English. Students will also engage in active discussion and attempt to use English to express opinions about poetry and its meaning. In doing so, students will gain valuable English language experience, cultural enrichment and language enrichment.

2. Course Objectives:

On completion of the course, students should be able to

a) demonstrate a basic understanding of the Elements of Poetry;
b) demonstrate a basics understanding of English prosody;
c) explicate and analyze the genre of poetry;
d) convey personal opinions about poetry informed by analysis;
e) interpret individual poems through discussion and writing;
f) write short poems about personal experience; and
g) utilize inference skills in the analysis and interpretation of poetry.

b. Enhance students’ communicative ability
c. Enhance students’ knowledge of cultural diversity

This is a 2 hour a week course designed to develop English proficiency through the study of American poetry. Students will read a variety of American poetry as an authentic language text in order to A) build a knowledge of expressive English vocabulary B) familiarize themselves with the literary genre of poetry and how to interpret it; develop C) basic language skills (i.e. reading, writing, listening and speaking); D) improve language areas (i.e. vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation); E) gain exposure, experience and practice with creative individual expression through English. Students will also engage in active discussion and use English to express opinions about poetry and it‘s meaning. In doing so, students will gain valuable English language knowledge and experience; literary, cultural and personal enrichment. Students will meet in class once a week. Class time will be divided between lecture, seminar and discussion. Instructor lecture will be for the sole purpose of providing background knowledge, instruction and modeling practices for engaging, evaluating and speaking about poetry. After that, students will be expected to discuss and work with individual poems through seminar style discussion, group work and individual class presentations.
