Reading Democracy and Education

Course Target

This course takes reading John Dewey's "Democracy and Education" as the core learning activity. The book "Democracy and Education" is called one of the three major educational masterpieces in the history of Western education. The remaining two books are Plato's "Utopia" and Rousseau's "Emile". These three books respectively represent the educational concepts, systems, connotations and interactive methods advocated and designed by thinkers in different social systems and conditions to develop human beings' actual potential and face their social environment. With the changes in the social environment, the connotation of education is no longer centered on simply transmitting and reproducing specific ideas, knowledge and abilities. With the changes in the era of globalization, the ideas and personal growth experiences of the educated are no longer the center. and other aspects are gradually included in the big concept of education. If the concept of "education" is subdivided, it needs to involve many levels, such as looking at human existence, the formation of knowledge, and the cultivation of feelings from a philosophical perspective; from a sociological perspective, we can think about the socialization and changes caused by education. The functionality of society; the importance of individual (cognitive, moral) development and interaction can be understood from a psychological perspective. Therefore, the curriculum design, teaching methods and assessment strategies in the corresponding education system are all subject to the presentation of various concepts and theories. But as far as Dewey is concerned, the past "education" focused too much on the transmission and cultivation of knowledge, while ignoring that personal learning largely comes from their "experience". The past education focused on preparing for future life, but ignored The cultivation of personal thinking, interest and judgment abilities. For Dewey, "democratic life" is a life of inquiry, communication and learning. Therefore, the relationship between democracy and education is actually to cultivate individuals to live together with others. It is a continuous interactive learning process in which individuals continue to learn, reflect and grow. So, what does Dewey think of this book "Democracy and Education"? Dewey himself emphasized that "this is a book that explores and explains the various ideas contained in a democratic society, and applies these ideas to various issues in education." Therefore, this book covers a wide range. In addition to the preface, there are 26 chapters, respectively covering the existence of the human community, the meaning of experience, various elements of teaching and learning, the relationship between subjects and teaching materials, and re-reflection based on this. Possibilities between philosophy and experience. Dewey himself also wrote a summary of each chapter, and this part can also be used as a summary to connect various concepts and connotations. Based on the above, this course is based on the reading, interpretation and exploration of Dewey's "Democracy and Education". It is hoped that students participating in this course can understand the conceptual connection between "democracy" and "education" in the reading text. , inspire exposure to various experiences in life and corresponding enthusiasm; in addition, we also re-examine the education process so far, find out the importance we attach to our interests in life, and use this as a way to connect with nature, others, and The contact point for multi-directional contact with society; finally, it also cultivates one's sensitivity to education, so that when one becomes a parent or an educator in the future, one can start from a more holistic perspective when facing the next generation of oneself and others. , to cultivate the next generation of democratic citizens who are spontaneous, interactive and cooperative in body, mind and spirit.
