本課程設計以喜愛「細讀經典原著」之學生為授課對象。
《紅樓夢》是曹雪芹的追憶書寫,小說主角賈寶玉和林黛玉的前身為神瑛侍者和絳珠仙草,二者有施受甘露和還淚償情的仙緣,因而串起天上與人間的軸線,且書中眾多年輕女性(特別是正、副、又副金釵)大都來自太虛幻境,以陪同神瑛、絳珠二者造歷幻緣,他們最終集結到太虛幻境在人間的投影、作為仙鄉贗品的「大觀園」,脂批文字才提示讀者「大觀園係玉兄與十二釵之太虛幻境,豈可草率」、「係十二釵棲止之所」等語。
「大觀園」如此工程浩大,借元春封妃將歸寧省親而起蓋,等於在整個家族聲勢高點造設這座園林註解著權勢、富貴與豪奢;又因有元春之命,寶玉和少女們得以在園內享有一段樂園般的時光,小說在眾人入園居住的第一年節慶活動或生活細節展示上,尤其顯現了悠緩慢速、浸淫於記憶細節的書寫特色,作者將時間空間拓入文字,從而又表現了主題「沉酣如夢」的意涵。作品前期用極大篇幅描寫寶玉和眾女兒在園內的生活,顯為作者記憶所修飾過,藉由虛構作品特意保留、凸出詩意性與理想性,有意識的和現實世界暫時脫勾,作為閱讀者,似乎也應該用同樣的耐性去品讀其中的美好以及隱喻。這座集塵世萬般精麗、「天上人間諸景備」的樂園,除了是神話、天界人物到紅塵俗世中來「歷盡離合悲歡、炎涼世態」的故事與生活座標,此一花園的榮枯,最終會和家族興衰、裙釵風流雲散等等情節,引度賈寶玉啟悟,它也作用著「以小見大」的悲劇美學功能、補述出塵世情景俱是虛幻的色空意涵。

"A Dream of Red Mansions" is written by Cao Xueqin. The protagonists of the novel, Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu, were formerly Shenying Waiters and Jiangzhu Xiancao.
