Students will obtain a basic knowledge of the most famous composers from the “Periods of Music” mentioned above, and will become familiar with some of their best compositions. Through much listening in the classroom, it is hoped that the student, at the end of the semester, will be able to hear a piece of music and know from what period in time it was written and identify the composer.

Students will learn about the historical development of instruments, the development of the orchestra and choir, and be exposed to basic musical terms so that they may have a way to discuss classical music with others. They will be exposed to many different types of music within each “Period of Music”; orchestral, choral, opera, ballet, and solo voices and instruments. Students will learn about musical notation and the history of its development.
