什麼是金融？要理解這個問題，必須要回到西方歷史的脈絡，在經歷了日耳曼人入侵與西羅馬帝國滅亡等一系列的騷亂之後，西方世界在中世紀的時候已逐漸恢復元氣，市鎮、城市和交易會如雨後春筍般的興起，農業、商業和工業等產業的緩慢進步，羅馬教會對商人行為的態度，在程度上從一開始的嚴厲拒斥漸漸地變得不再那麼排斥，加上社會上各種交換逐漸的發達，使得對於金錢的需求越來越大。自中世紀之後，表面上我們會看到西方經濟在文藝復興、大航海時代、科學革命以及啟蒙運動等一系列巨大的歷史變遷中逐步發展，但常被忽略的是與此同時作為金融要素的工具（匯票、借貸）、制度（法規）、組織（股份公司）等，事實上也都在歷史的進程中漸次成形。因此，就西方近代社會的興起而言，我們常會聚焦在其政治、社會、文化的變遷面向，但卻對經濟以及存在於其背後隱而不顯、具有重要影響力的金融相當陌生，故本課程主要希望透過對西方經濟與社會的變遷過程中，金融所具有的藏身於後但擁有支配性的地位有所探討，換言之，本課程期望可以幫助學習者深入了解在經濟與社會發展的歷史脈絡中，金融所扮演的抽象但又如水一般，既可載舟，又可覆舟的角色。

This makes the demand for money increasingly larger. Since the Middle Ages, on the surface we have seen Western economy gradually develop in a series of huge historical changes such as literary revival, the era of navigation, scientific revolution and the invasion of Mongolia, but what is often overlooked is that it is also a financial factor. Tools (redeems, loans), systems (legals), organizations (joint stock companies), etc. have actually taken shape several times in the historical process. Therefore, as far as the rise of modern Western society is concerned, we often focus on the changes in politics, society and culture, but we are quite unfamiliar with economics and finance that exists behind it but is not obvious and has important influence. The course mainly hopes to change Western economy and society During the process, the hiding but dominant position of finance has been explored. In other words, this course expects to help learners understand the abstract but also water-like role of finance in the historical links of economic and social development.
