寫讀書摘要（memo）和學期報告（term paper）是社會學訓練的基本功。「怎麼讀書、怎麼寫閱讀摘要或學期報告，可以獲得最大的學習效益？」是社會系學生的普遍困擾。此外，若有更進一步的研究興趣者，也會有「如何進入研究實作？如何寫出研究計畫？」的困擾。本課程的主要目的即是解決這些普遍困擾。課程設計聚焦於研究論文的核心組成部分，透過「問題意識」、「研究設計」、「論證結構」、「現象建立」、「具體的無知」及「策略性研究材料」等主題，以及文獻搜尋、引文格式和簡報技巧等觀念和技巧的講解與實作，並以「文獻評讀」或「研究計畫書」作為落實這些學習的工具，建立社會研究與論文寫作的基本技巧Writing reading summaries (memo) and term papers (term paper) are basic skills of sociology training. "How to read, how to write a reading summary or term report to get the maximum learning benefit?" This is a common problem for social studies students.
