This course is mainly taught to students from the Department of Life Sciences, allowing students to have a preliminary understanding of insects and entomology. Topics covered include the diversity and importance of insects, the interrelationships between important structures (morphology) and functions (physiology) of insects, insect ecology and behavior, and the impact of insects on economics and medicine. In addition, the relationship between insects and other animals, insect classification and evolution, etc. will also be introduced. The internship part focuses on insect collection, preservation, specimen preparation, etc. Through this course, we hope to help students understand what factors allow insects to successfully reproduce on the earth. We also hope to widely develop students' interest in animals other than humans as future research topics. Through the introduction of this course, everyone can recognize the common insects around them and understand their biology and unique adaptations.
Insects are the most abundant and diverse animals on earth. Approximately five out of every six species of land animals are insects. Is the huge number and diversity of insects just a coincidence, or is there a reason? If the diversity of insects is not accidental, can we find the reason through the many characteristics of the internal structure, physiology, genesis and life history of insects? What is the key to insect evolution? Exploring why insects are so important in nature will be one of the themes of this course.
The purpose of this course is to introduce college students to the dizzying diversity and habits of insects through lectures and readings. This course will explore the bizarre biology of insects by examining their evolutionary history, internal structure, occurrence, feeding habits, life history strategies, behaviors, and long-term interactions with humans (both positive and negative). The fieldwork and laboratory portion of the course will provide hands-on opportunities to collect and examine these stunning animals.
