當代對於儒家哲學的理解與討論有很多面向，在道德哲學方面，除了如當代新儒家牟宗三以義務論來理解外儒家之外，現代西方學者也以別的方式理解儒家，諸如角色倫理學（role ethics）、德性倫理學（virtue ethics）與情感主義（sentimentalism）。在政治哲學方面，牟宗三以良知自我坎陷開出民主的概念來說明當代儒家政治與古代儒家德性政治的不同，此外也有蔣慶力求與心性儒學切割的政治儒學，也有陳祖為提倡儒家致善主義（perfectionism）。本課程目標有三：第一，希望同學們可以對當代的儒家道德哲學與政治哲學有初步的理解；第二，鼓勵同學們透過討論評判各種立場，即批判式閱讀理解、重述論證；第三，鼓勵同學們嘗試提出自己不同於前人的儒家構想。

There are many aspects to the contemporary understanding and discussion of Confucian philosophy. In terms of moral philosophy, in addition to the contemporary neo-Confucian Mou Zongsan who understands Confucianism through deontology, modern Western scholars also understand Confucianism in other ways, such as role ethics, virtue ethics and sentimentalism. In terms of political philosophy, Mou Zongsan used the self-entrapment of conscience to develop the concept of democracy to explain the difference between contemporary Confucian politics and ancient Confucian virtue politics. In addition, there is also Jiang Qing's political Confucianism that strives to be separated from the Confucianism of mind, and there is also Chen Zuwei who advocates Confucian perfectionism. The goals of this course are threefold: first, I hope students can have a preliminary understanding of contemporary Confucian moral philosophy and political philosophy; second, students are encouraged to evaluate various positions through discussion, that is, critical reading comprehension and restatement of arguments; third, students are encouraged to try to propose their own Confucian ideas that are different from those of their predecessors.
