This course is applying the methods of philosophical analysis and textual interpretation to investigate the ancient Chinese thinkers’ philosophical thought, with focus on some problems which are of modern significance. It aims at helping students, from philosophical and historical perspectives, to understand the import of traditional Chinese philosophical thought and its dynamic development.
主要課題包括:孔子以前古代中國的哲學與宗教思想、孔子與儒學的興起、孟子的心性論、荀子的人性論、墨子的兼愛思想、老子的道論、莊子的人生哲學、公孫龍子與名家的存有論與邏輯思考、後期墨家的邏輯與語意學及韓非子與法家的政治哲學。
Main topics include: Philosophical and religious thought prior to Confucius, Confucius and the Rise of Confucianism, Mencius’ moral psychology, Xunzi’s theory of human nature, Mozi’s idea of universal love, Laozi idea of dao, Zhuangzi’s philosophy of life, the ontological and logical thinking in the Gongsun Longzi and the School of Names, Later Mohist logic and semantics, and the political philosophy of the Han Feizi and the School of Law.
This is a course that explores traditional Chinese philosophical thought through the methods of philosophical analysis and textual interpretation, thereby exploring some of the issues of modern significance.
