本課程介紹西方自古希臘到文藝復興的藝術。這一段時間，藝術採用了神話、宗教及現實社會的題材，往往蘊含了象徵與教化的意義，同時也反映了時代背景。有的藝術品有特殊的使用方式，顯示他們的社會的功能。課程將介紹如何判斷藝術的主題並進行詮釋。課程也將介紹藝術品的材料，以及處理材料的技術，呈現人類利用物質的歷史。現代科學家藉由儀器分析來判斷藝術品的年代和製作地點，目前部分成果已經運用於貿易和人群移動的研究。本課程希望從多個面向協助同學瞭解西洋早期藝術。This course introduces Western art from ancient Greece to the Renaissance. During this period, art adopted themes from mythology, religion and real society, often containing symbolic and educational meanings, and also reflecting the background of the times. Some works of art have special uses, showing their social function. The course will introduce how to determine the subject matter of art and interpret it. The course will also introduce the materials of artworks and the techniques for processing materials, presenting the history of human use of materials. Modern scientists use instrumental analysis to determine the age and production location of artworks. Some of the results have now been applied to the study of trade and human movement. This course hopes to help students understand early Western art from multiple aspects.
