Course Target

Upon the end of the class, students are expected to:
1. Learn new global perspectives and research directions of conservation movement of world heritage and cultural landscape.
2. Learn planning and design approaches on cultural landscape on the basis of the findings from global cultural landscape research and related case studies.
3. Improve the ability to do comprehensive and critical thinking regarding environmental landscape in Taiwan.
4. Improve the ability to identify problems regarding cultural landscape in Taiwan and provide solutions to the problems.

The main objectives of this course are to:

3. To enable students to have a deeper thinking ability about Taiwan’s environmental landscape.
4. Improve students’ ability to explore and solve problems in cases related to Taiwan’s cultural landscape.
Upon the end of the class, students are expected to:

The core topic of this course is to debate the relationship between cultural landscape changes and social processes. The course is concerned with the issue of landscape design in:
1. What are the symbolic meanings of different landscape cultures?
2. How is it constructed in different historical stages and different social contexts?
3. What is the relationship between these landscapes and the production and distribution of this society?

This course will introduce the course content and cover three parts: theory, design methods, and introduction of related cases.
Through the practice of domestic and foreign cases, students can establish relevant research topics from the cases and conduct preliminary research, so as to cultivate students' future ability in cultural landscape conservation research and design practice.
1. Theories include: critical analysis of cultural landscapes from different disciplines such as landscape architecture, cultural geography, urban planning and design, urban sociology, and urban anthropology.
2. Research objects include: theoretical discussion of cultural landscape, artificially created environment and natural ecological environment, urban and rural areas, institutional landscape and informal landscape.
3. Relevant cases include cases from abroad and urban and rural areas in Taiwan. By comparing the cases with the above-mentioned relevant theories, we explore the current relevant discussions of the so-called modern landscape and post-modern landscape, as well as the social significance and production process of "post-modern landscape design" as the core of the research.
