社會福利行政的任務正在快速變遷之中，單單是民國一百年以後的幾年，就有全然不同的面貌。在中央，政務委員一定有社會福利背景的，組織上主管單位由內政部轉到衛生福利部，該部必然有一位次長需主管社會福利，設立社會及家庭署、保護服務司、社會保險及社會工作司等前所未有的單位，也各有首長。在地方，原本只有台北、高雄兩個直轄市，在很短時間內增加了新北、台中、台南又加了桃園，俗稱六都。六都在經費上遠比其他十六個縣市寬裕，社會局長為十三職等，均為特任。十六個縣市的社會局處首長，也擁有不小的權力，更是縣市首長特別看重的。
社會福利行政為保障人們的基本生活權益和福祉，透過規劃、組織、任用、領導、控制、決策、預算，以及公共關係與報告等過程，將政府的福利政策轉化為各種活動或措施，為民眾或有需求者提供有計畫、有系統及具專業化的服務輸送之安排。

The tasks of social welfare administration are changing rapidly. In just a few years after the 100th anniversary of the Republic of China, it had a completely different look. In the central government, political affairs committee members must have a background in social welfare. The organizational unit in charge was transferred from the Ministry of Interior to the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The ministry must have a deputy minister in charge of social welfare. Unprecedented units such as the Department of Social and Family Affairs, the Department of Protective Services, and the Department of Social Insurance and Social Work were established, each with its own chief. At the local level, there were originally only two municipalities directly under the central government, Taipei and Kaohsiung. In a short period of time, New Taipei City, Taichung, Tainan and Taoyuan were added, commonly known as the Six Capitals. The capital of Liudu is far more abundant than the other sixteen counties and cities. The social director level is thirteen, and all of them are special appointments. The heads of the social affairs bureaus of the sixteen counties and cities also have considerable power, and they are particularly valued by the county and city heads.
In order to protect people's basic living rights and well-being, social welfare administration transforms government welfare policies into various activities or measures through processes such as planning, organization, appointment, leadership, control, decision-making, budgeting, and public relations and reporting, and provides planned, systematic and professional service delivery arrangements for the people or those in need.
