Collective Violence and Social Suffering
Course Target
The working environment of helping workers always involves cooperating with people and groups in trouble. Therefore, exploring the difficulties of people and groups in trouble has become the fundamental training of social work. The method of analyzing difficulties comes from sorting out the flow of kinetic energy and the meaning of phenomena as small as individuals and as large as the world. The explicit predicament of individuals points to the invisible pressure and restraint from the social structure, collective man-made violence such as war, massacre, colonization, and abandonment; natural disasters such as earthquakes, wind/floods; or air crashes, infectious diseases, etc. caused by frequent globalization. These scenes of suffering all use images of suffering people one after another to actually bear the fate of the social collective. Through personal suffering experiences, Xu Shuo confronts the political, economic, social and other forms of power implicit in the suffering scene. This can be called the pain and trauma caused by collective violence. It is not only deep in the minds and bodies of the victims, but also engraved in the social memory of the group. This course will explore why those who suffer suffer, and explore the causes, effects and impacts of traumatic experiences and painful disorders caused by collective violence through political, economic, institutional power and other aspects. At the same time, we try to understand the survival of people who suffer from collective violence, and how to obtain healing in suffering situations through group power. And how do social workers form ways to help people and work strategies in their networks?
