「命」的觀念,在中國哲學以至中國文化,影響極其廣泛,源遠流長。它涉及宗教、道德、政治、人生態度、通俗文化,以至迷信,亦跟儒家道家密切相關。
本課之目的,是在對「命」觀念之分析,以顯示其眾多涵義,並討論所涉及的爭議。
此課之內容,包含天命、義命、性命、安命、正命、俟命、立命、無命、知命、運命、遭命、受命、隨命、祿命、壽命、命根等。
本課所依之文本,雖有歷史之先後,但重點不在源流,而在觀念之分解疏通。此包括《詩經》《易》《論語》《孟子》《莊子》《中庸》《論衡》《墨子•非命》以及宋明儒(如張橫渠、二程子) ,以至唯識宗等。
