By the end of the course, students should have achieved the following objectives:
1. Students will get familiar with existing major corpora and the use of variety of corpus tools
2. Students will familiarize themselves with the methods to perform a corpus-based quantitative analysis of linguistic phenomena
3. Students will build a corpus of language data for a particular purpose of linguistic research or language teaching
4. Students will carry out small-scale corpus-based research projects

This cross disciplinary course will introduce students to both the theory of Corpus Linguistics and the fundamental concepts or methods of Natural Language Processing. Besides reviewing state-of-the-art research papers, students will gain hands-on experience in building corpora using basic NLP methods as well as applying corpora especially in language learning and teaching.
