這門課的主要目標並不僅僅是講述《孟子》一書的思想內容，而是以《孟子》的文本為材料，學習辨識文本的內在結構，並按此結構，獨立於傳統注疏，推證文本的意義。The main goal of this course is not just to describe the ideological content of the book "Mencius", but to use the text of "Mencius" as material to learn to identify the internal structure of the text, and based on this structure, independent of traditional commentaries, to deduce evidence meaning of the text.
