每一門學科的發展史，是從事相關專業的學子所必備的知識，音樂史更是培養音樂專業人才不可或缺的素養。然而，在西方藝術音樂的專業訓練下，將中國音樂史置入這樣一個課程架構與教學系統中，究竟應居於什麼地位，又有何必要？同時，誠如德國音樂史學家達爾豪斯（Carl Dahlhaus, 1928-1989）所指出，音樂史面對著「歷史性」與「藝術性」之間的張力，中國音樂史也不例外。本課程企圖在「歷史性」、「文獻性」資料的引介與整合之外，進一步加強「藝術性」、「音樂性」認知層面的引導與開發，為身在台灣的西方古典音樂學習者，量身打造一門別開生面的中國音樂史課程，以提供有別於西方音樂、卻又可以會通於西方音樂的元素。唯有注入活水，才能讓學生們真正明白為什麼要學音樂史，以及學習中國音樂史的意義何在。The development history of each subject is essential knowledge for students engaged in related majors, and music history is an indispensable quality for cultivating music professionals.
