Sound Art and Auditory Research

Course Target

As far as the history of art as a whole is concerned, what is seen visually is often the most important medium for artistic expression. Regardless of whether it is two-dimensional or three-dimensional, static or dynamic, the aspect of human perception that is used to appreciate art is mostly visual. The eye's reception of shapes, colors, or continuous images, as well as subsequent thinking and even the arousal of emotions, are the foundation of countless artistic creations. Music is often considered to be the only art form that purely uses hearing. However, the human hearing can certainly receive much more than musical sounds. If existing sounds in any living environment, or any sounds produced by utensils, computers, or even equipment, etc., or even non-singing human voices, can be transformed into creative media, then "sound" ) can become another way to shape artistic works. Sound art was regarded as an independent form of artistic expression and only began in the late 20th century. In the development process of contemporary art, sound art has no obvious historical context and collective movement. However, in recent years, artistic creations with sound as the main body have proliferated in large numbers, and the channels through which sound is transmitted and the ways in which it is listened to are also very different (such as multi-channel speakers, Bluetooth headsets, audio transducers, etc.). Major biennales and well-known contemporary art museums have introduced a large number of sound art works. When "listening" is included in the act of perceiving art, it is also beginning to pay attention to auditory culture. This course will start with an introduction to the origins of sound art, aiming to attribute "hearing" to the subject and text of artistic creation, and gradually construct an overall overview of sound art by exploring various forms of sound creation in the past sixty years, and reveal The various possibilities of sound as a creative material will stimulate students' multiple understandings and interests in "sound" as an art form, and continue to guide students to incorporate various man-made or natural sounds into their creative thinking, and then incorporate them into their creative thinking. The sound is abstract and experimental, expressing the aesthetics, mood, issue or image it wants to present. Compared with the established schools and doctrines in the history of painting in visual art, the purpose of this course is not to define and establish sound art, but to emphasize the fluidity and controversy of sound art as an emerging art field, and to guide students to expand the scope of sound art. academic discussion. The course will also study hearing and sound reception from the field of psychoacoustics, and explain the important impact of space on hearing from a physical perspective, including how sound physical phenomena such as echo and resonance are generated, and how they can be applied to concrete and The shaping of abstract sound. This course will be accompanied by listening and appreciation of a large number of works, so as to understand the various current forms of sound art creation, as well as important sound artists and their representative works. The course will also provide an overview of the integration of sound art with other fields and fields, as well as its differences and similarities with music. Finally, it will return to the technical level, explore the software and hardware for creating sound, and the importance of recording technology, and guide students to practice sound creation from the technical level. After studying this course, it is hoped that students will have a more acute awareness of sound emitters in the environment and stimulate their creative potential in collecting or editing sounds, or even in abstraction and experimentation.
