簡單來說「學校社會工作」就是將社會工作專業運用在以學校為基礎的生態系統中，協助學生及系統中的人都能得到適當的發展機會。《國民教育法》為學校社會工作進入校園輔導網絡提供了法源依據，也為學校社工啟動了專業制度化的發展契機。學校環境提供社會工作專業一個獨特的運作環境，藉由學校社工師與學校團隊成員及社區生態系統間的資源相互合作，往往能對學生及其所屬的家庭、學校帶來更適切的幫助。
