The Inspired Island: A Series of Eminent Writers From Taiwan

Course Target

note: Just as Mencius said, "When you praise his poems and read his books, do you know who he is? This is how you discuss his world." Therefore, the keynote of this course takes the life of the collaborator and the appreciation of the text as the two main axes, emphasizing that the interpretation and appreciation of the text must contextualize the author's life and times. In view of this, parts of the author's life and times are presented in the form of a documentary, striving to achieve a sociological "phenomenological reduction" to capture the atmosphere and sensory structure of the times in which the text was written. However, let me emphasize that the screening of documentaries in this course is by no means "killing time." Please do not misunderstand the core spirit behind this course design when choosing a course. In addition, the text appreciation part emphasizes intensive reading and close reading. Students who take the course every week should be fully prepared to share their thoughts after reading and watching the documentary. In short, this course is not a "cool" course, so don't try it unless you are serious, otherwise you will feel like you are saying hello when you come to class.

This course uses the "They Write on the Island" literary master series of films as the main course. On the one hand, it uses documentary as a medium and uses the film language of young directors as a guide to introduce Taiwan's most important post-war writers to students. Through documentaries, we can learn more about the writers' lives and creations; on the other hand, we study the writers' representative works and master their literary aesthetics, hoping to rekindle a new wave of "Renaissance" through in-depth reading of the works. "They Write on the Island" is the most important literary record in Taiwan's literary world in the 21st century and the most profound literary film in Taiwan's film industry. Using the visual language of documentary/literary films, it presents the creative souls of seven important post-war Taiwanese writers, including Lin Haiyin, Zhou Mengdie, Zheng Chouyu, Wang Wenxing, Wan Xian, Bai Xianyong, and Yang Mu. Through images, this course hopes to allow students to get to know the important writers who have influenced Taiwanese literature for several generations. By referring to the important representative works of these writers, they will be divided into groups to integrate text, literature, images and movies. In the fascinating light and shadow narrative and literary historical memory, they will be able to read the delicacy and thickness of Taiwanese culture, as well as the macro-modern process of Taiwan's history and social changes after the war. Through a variety of literary works, this course is positioned as an aesthetic practice. Through in-depth study, discussion, and appreciation of literary works, it is hoped that course participants can become aesthetic subjects and even start literary creation.
