Gender, Medicine and Images

Course Target

[Since the course will be fine-tuned according to the number of electives, the official teaching syllabus is based on the one issued by the first-time teacher]

1. Course Introduction

(The outline has been adjusted and is different from the previous version)
This course will be divided into three parts: 1. Gender in Medical Sociology: Medical, Illness and Health Issues in Gender Studies. In feminist sociology and medical sociology, "gender, power and medical knowledge" is the topic of discussion. We will see the doctor-patient relationship, the male perspective of medical knowledge, and various issues in the social medical process from female physical diseases. Second, as health caregivers, women’s identities include family caregivers such as nurses, mothers, or wives. What are the special features of these jobs in terms of gender power relations? At the collective level, women's care work often takes place within a field of struggle dominated by male professionalism. For example, before the Japanese occupation, the midwifery profession was gradually replaced by modern obstetrics and gynecology, in which various complex technological and social factors intervened. In the first few weeks of this course, students will be guided to understand the history of women as midwives and the changes in modernity. They will also introduce alternative views that are different from mainstream obstetric medicine, such as gentle birth and other discussions. This course will explore the following topics: the relationship between contraceptive pills and the development of hormonal science, HRT drugs for menopause, the rise of midwives and obstetric medicine (pregnancy and reproductive medicine), the significance of ultrasound images and the reproduction of embryos, etc.

3. Explore visual culture and healthcare from an interdisciplinary perspective of Science, Technology and Society (STS) (incorporating visual culture theory). Generally speaking, the scope of visual culture is how visual images and technologies (photography, film, television, computers and other types of images) are simultaneously fields of social intervention and dominate our view of the objective world. Visual culture research emphasizes that various media or visual technologies are not "transparent", but are fields of ideology and discourse. STS research points out that scientific knowledge is part of social history and politics, and the use of technological objects will also dominate people's cognition and habits. Scientific imaging can be a tool for the dominant, and it can also be a tool for the weak to speak out. This class allows students to read the popular science book on medical imaging - "Exposed", and understand the history and role of X-ray, ultrasound and other technologies in detecting diseases in the female body. At the same time, we will also visit the Science Museum to see how the popular science knowledge is disseminated and what technologies and social constructions are involved in its discussion.
