Introduction to Social and Solidarity Economy

Course Target

In an atmosphere where capitalism continues to expand uneven development around the world, and in an ideological atmosphere where "the market economy is the only system that works, there is no alternative", the world People and grassroots organizations everywhere continue to experiment and demonstrate the possibilities of other economic models. These alternative economic models, broadly called the social and solidarity economy (SSE), exist outside or in the cracks of the mainstream economic model. They are often not noticed because they are too small or on the margins. They include various types of production or Consumer co-ops, fair trade movements, alternative currencies, community supported agriculture, circular economy, sharing economy, developmental social work and more. Different social and solidarity economy types and specific cases have their own problems to deal with. After the classic prototypes achieve varying degrees and levels of success, they are usually initiated, imitated, and copied, but with varying results. Academics and practitioners devote considerable efforts to identifying important mechanisms, evaluating outcomes and unintended consequences, and exploring innovative strategies to increase the likelihood of success. In this effort, sociological intervention plays an important role. This course is also an invitation to explore together: through the existing research literature, it examines the unique problems and coping strategies of these types of social solidarity economies, providing knowledge preparation for sociological intervention.
