What is the relationship between knowledge and social practice? This is a topic that has been paid attention to by social science students recently. This course breaks the traditional "Whether to step out of the ivory tower?" and knowledge/social reality, and emphasizes that there is no "test" and schizophrenia in social life and social reality. In theory, thinking often falls into the empty and impolite. This course trial will bring students into a world closer to the lives of the common people, facing the ideas of real suffering people and social sports organizations, thereby reducing the separation between intellectuals and common people's lives. Only by being closer to the situation of ordinary people's lives and social sportsmen can we compete with the dominance of mainstream ideological forms in individual and collective levels. In this way, we fundamentally evolve the social connotation we have learned. This course uses three topics to serve as social problems in Taiwan: 1. Anti-nuclear and nuclear technology; 2. Faced with female employees of the US wireless company RCA and electronics industry; 3. Animal welfare and animal rights.
This course will ask NGO workers related to social discussion questions to discuss what problems they encounter during their actions and how to deal with seemingly neutral and objective conscious attitudes toward national and technological bureaucrats. The governance of scientific numbers may involve many specific political positions, such as the problems behind nuclear digital myths, RCA and Taiwan’s economic miracle. At the same time, this course takes science and society and society (STS) and social movement as the main theoretical basis, and uses scientific disputes, scientific uncertainty, political nature of technology, and epidemic disputes to enter Taiwan social problems. It also uses experiences such as social movements and RCA victims as the basis to understand how social movements intervene in this type of dispute and translate the domination of transnational enterprises or countries and technology bureaucrats.
In the first week, the teacher and his classmates discussed a textbook or information that could be used by the classmates. We set three social and environmental technology themes: 1. RCA scientific disputes and RCA workers’ complaints (the US multinational company RCA left a large amount of factory pollution in the 1970s, which caused workers to get sick), 2. Animal welfare and vegetarianism. This question also relates to global warming, vegetarianism, climate change discussions, and the course links animal welfare issues from theories such as ecology feminism, environmental movement, and the relationship between animals and people; 3. Nuclear power issues. The course conducts research on these three topics in a small/personal in-depth survey method. In addition to conducting surveys and finding information, the final goal is to make an in-depth survey report (citizen news reporter) and Q&A/public package (or publication) to accumulate the results of the academic period.
