STS and Social Issues in Taiwan
Course Target
What is the relationship between knowledge and social practice? This is a topic of recent concern to sociology students. This course breaks the traditional binary opposition between "Are you stepping out of the ivory tower?" and knowledge/social practice, emphasizing that without the "test" and refinement of social life and social practice, theoretical thinking often falls into bookishness and nihilism. This course attempts to bring students into a world closer to ordinary people's lives, and to face the thoughts of people who are suffering in reality and social movement organizers, thereby reducing the gap between intellectuals and ordinary people's lives. Only by getting closer to the lives of ordinary people and the situation of social activists can we resist the dominance of mainstream ideologies at the individual and collective levels. Furthermore, the sociological connotation of what we have learned is basically evolved. This course uses three themes as cases of social issues in Taiwan: 1. Anti-nuclear and nuclear power technology; 2. RCA and occupational disease issues among female workers in the electronics industry; 3. Animal welfare and animal rights.
This course will try its best to invite NGO workers related to social issues to talk about the problems they encountered in the course of action, and how they faced the state and technocrats in governing with seemingly neutral and objective ideologies. However, this kind of scientific digital governance may have the involvement of many specific political positions, such as the myth of nuclear power numbers, the problems behind RCA and Taiwan's economic miracle. At the same time, this course is based on science, technology and society (STS) and social movements as its main theoretical basis. It cuts into Taiwanese social issues based on issues such as scientific disputes, scientific uncertainty, the politics of technological objects, and epidemiological controversies. Based on the experience of social activists and RCA victims, it will understand how social activists can intervene in such disputes and overturn the dominance of multinational corporations, countries, and technocrats.
In the first week, teachers and classmates will discuss together a teaching material or information that can be used by students. We set three social and environmental technology themes: 1. RCA scientific controversy and RCA worker litigation (the American multinational company RCA left a large amount of factory pollution in the 1970s, causing workers to become sick), 2. Animal welfare and vegetarianism. This issue is also related to global warming, vegetarianism, and climate change issues, and the course will link to animal welfare issues from theories such as ecofeminism, environmental movements, and the relationship between animals and humans; 3. Nuclear power issues. The course uses a group/individual in-depth investigation method to conduct research on these three topics. In addition to conducting investigations in groups and finding information, the final goal is to produce an in-depth investigative report (citizen journalist) and Q&A/lazy bag (or publication) to accumulate the results of the semester.
