教育目標 Course Target
「什麼是資本主義(Capitalism)?資本主義如何左右現代人的集體命運?存在其它出路(alternatives)嗎?」在我看來,仍然是社會學的核心提問。這些問題之所以難以回答,部分原因在於資本主義至今仍然持續演變,並且和眾多政治、社會、文化、地緣因素交纏在一起,顯得異常複雜。另外一部分原因,則在於這些問題注定引發眾多政治聯想,誘惑不同立場的學者展開長達數世紀的辯論。怎樣理解「資本主義」,不僅決定了我們怎樣解讀當代世界的走向,更決定我們如何定義自己、自己所處的社會,以及勾勒一個更加合理的未來圖像,導引出所能期待的社會實踐(無論是支持現況還是反對現況)。換句話說,這絕非一個純粹的知識議題,而且是牽涉甚廣的政治與實踐課題。
身處21世紀初期的台灣,在這帝國邊緣,我們又不得不敏感於:「究竟應該怎樣理解台灣的經濟處境?我們位處資本主義世界經濟(world economy)的什麼位置?全球歷史變遷的浪潮正將我們帶向何方?」我們熟悉的台灣社會議題,包括青年貧窮化、貧富分化、勞動彈性化、房價高漲、掠奪式積累、民主失靈、社會福利崩壞和保守主義興起等等,其實都不是台灣獨有的現象,而是當代資本主義世界經濟衍生的結構性問題。由美國主導的「全球化」正在結束,區域經濟的板塊劇烈挪移,地緣政治充滿了暴力預感,極右派在世界各地崛起……。台灣社會雖然偏處一隅,卻不可能永遠置身事外。非常遺憾,台灣社會學界愈來愈無力回答這些問題,沈溺在上個世紀所定義的社會學學術課題。21世紀撲天蓋地而來,青年世代如何自處?我們需要政治經濟學的幫助,並且渴求具有世界格局的視野(perspectives of the World)。
政治經濟學是充滿意識型態的戰場。但從另外一個角度來看,至少學習政治經濟學有機會讓我們擺脫受欺騙的命運。本課程將沿著思想史的脈絡,依序探討10位思想家的政治經濟學理論,仔細檢查主流經濟學與馬克思主義之間的爭執,探索資本主義世界經濟的運作邏輯,最後考察幾種可能的解釋。我們將發現這些思想家怎樣突破時代的成見,甚至影響歷史的走向,參與塑造了我們熟悉的今日世界。從理論經典出發,並不妨礙我們時刻回望當代台灣社會,反而提供了更寬闊的反省視角與迴旋空間。拉開一點必要的距離,但願能夠增添一份歷史的理解,更貼近瞭解我們世代的集體命運。看見限制,也尋找機會。
"What is Capitalism? How does Capitalism influence the collective destiny of modern people? Are there other alternatives?" In my opinion, this is still the core question of sociology. Part of the reason why these questions are difficult to answer is that capitalism continues to evolve today and is intertwined with numerous political, social, cultural, and geographical factors, making it extremely complex. Another part of the reason is that these issues are bound to trigger numerous political associations and tempt scholars from different positions to engage in centuries-long debates. How we understand "capitalism" not only determines how we interpret the direction of the contemporary world, but also determines how we define ourselves and the society we live in, as well as outline a more reasonable image of the future and guide the expected social practices (whether supporting the current status quo or opposing the current status quo). In other words, this is by no means a purely intellectual issue, but a far-reaching political and practical issue.
In Taiwan in the early 21st century, on the edge of this empire, we have to be sensitive to: "How should we understand Taiwan's economic situation? We are located in the capitalist world economy (world economy). economy)? Where are the currents of global historical change taking us? ” The social issues in Taiwan that we are familiar with, including youth poverty, polarization between rich and poor, labor flexibility, rising housing prices, predatory accumulation, democratic failure, collapse of social welfare, and the rise of conservatism, are actually not phenomena unique to Taiwan, but structural problems derived from the contemporary capitalist world economy. "Globalization" led by the United States is ending, regional economic sectors are shifting violently, geopolitics is full of premonitions of violence, and the far right is rising around the world... Although Taiwanese society is in a corner, it cannot remain aloof forever. It is a pity that the sociological community in Taiwan is increasingly unable to answer these questions and is obsessed with academic sociological topics defined in the last century. The 21st century is approaching, how will the young generation cope with it? We need the help of political economy and we crave perspectives of the World.
Political economy is an ideological battleground. But from another perspective, at least studying political economics has a chance to save us from the fate of being deceived. This course will follow the context of intellectual history, sequentially explore the political economic theories of 10 thinkers, carefully examine the dispute between mainstream economics and Marxism, explore the operating logic of the capitalist world economy, and finally examine several possible explanations. We will discover how these thinkers broke through the prejudices of the times, even influenced the direction of history, and participated in shaping the world we are familiar with today. Starting from theoretical classics does not prevent us from always looking back at contemporary Taiwanese society. On the contrary, it provides a broader perspective of reflection and room for maneuver. By creating a necessary distance, I hope it can add a historical understanding and gain a closer understanding of the collective destiny of our generation. See limitations and look for opportunities.
