2008年全球金融危機、佔領運動以及世界各地諸眾抵抗運動的蓬勃發生，再度印證著馬克思主義理論思想的價值，本課程探討當代具有影響力的理論家—大衛哈維的馬克思主義與地理空間辯證。跟之前開設的大衛哈維專題不同的是，本次課程主要從「思想史」的角度切入，探討哈維從1960年代到2016年這50年來的思想發展、演變、思辯其學術關懷。

哈維這50年來累積的理論思想，體系博大深厚，可以放在不同脈絡來探討，例如關於歷史唯物論、知識史與認識論、空間理論、全球資本主義、人文地理學、都市理論、政治哲學等等諸多面向。這門課的基本疑旨是，哈維到底怎麼是把他的理論有系統地一步一步發展出來的呢?如何提出具有原創性的見解?受到那些思想家的影響、繼受、論戰?所鑲嵌的知識-社會環境與思想地理-氣候又是如何?

本課程適合對於馬克思主義、社會科學空間轉向(spatial turn)、人文地理學、不均等發展、城市問題、都市社會運動等有興趣的研究生參與，課程以seminar形式進行，除授課者較精要的講授外，以同學就重要文本的閱讀、導讀、提問和討論為主，教學哲學重點是「清晰易懂 (transparency) 」，依研究生「可負擔」的閱讀標準規劃閱讀材料，每篇文章均有一位同學負責導讀(約20-25分鐘)，另外一位同學提問，進而帶動全班的討論。參與同學的義務除了出席與課堂導讀、提問、參與討論之外，需繳交一篇7,500字左右的期中報告，以及12,500字左右的期末報告。

本課程以2018年出版、授課者審閱的《挑戰資本主義：大衛．哈維精選文集》一書為最主要教材，將閱讀這本書的所有章節。

The global financial crisis in 2008, the Occupy movement, and the vigorous occurrence of many resistance movements around the world have once again confirmed the value of Marxist theoretical thought. This course explores the dialectics between Marxism and geographical space of David Harvey, an influential contemporary theorist. Different from the previous special topic on David Harvey, this course mainly starts from the perspective of "history of ideas" and explores the development, evolution, thinking and academic care of Harvey's thoughts in the 50 years from the 1960s to 2016.

Harvey's theoretical thoughts accumulated over the past 50 years are broad and profound, and can be discussed in different contexts, such as historical materialism, intellectual history and epistemology, spatial theory, global capitalism, human geography, urban theory, political philosophy, and many other aspects. The basic question of this course is, how did Harvey systematically develop his theory step by step? How did he come up with original insights? How was he influenced, inherited, and debated by those thinkers? What was the embedded knowledge-social environment and ideological geography-climate like?

This course is suitable for graduate students who are interested in Marxism, the spatial turn of social sciences, human geography, unequal development, urban issues, urban social movements, etc. The course is conducted in the form of a seminar. In addition to the lecturer's more essential lectures, students mainly read, guide, ask questions and discuss important texts. The teaching philosophy focuses on "clear and easy to understand (transparency)" ”, the reading materials are planned according to the "affordable" reading standards for graduate students. Each article has a classmate who is responsible for the introductory reading (about 20-25 minutes), and another classmate asks questions, thereby stimulating the whole class discussion. In addition to attending class introductions, asking questions, and participating in discussions, participating students are required to submit an interim report of approximately 7,500 words and a final report of approximately 12,500 words.

This course is based on "Challenging Capitalism: David." published in 2018 and reviewed by the instructor. Harvey's Selected Works" is the main textbook, and all chapters of this book will be read.
