本課程將以Alan Swingewood 之Sociological Poetics and Aesthetic Theory ( 1987. NY: St.Martin's Press.)為主要讀本，並佐以其他文學社會學的教材，以檢驗那些勾勒出現代文藝社會學可能性的幾項主要文學理論、美學理論和文化理論。本學期探討的主題區分為兩個單元：第一單元當中，將歷史性地回顧社會學詩學與社會學美學從十九世紀以來的發展根源，包括實證主義、歷史主義和馬克思主義，及文學藝術社會學在當代馬克思主義、形式主義、結構主義和文學理論當中的進一步發展。第二單元將嘗試掌握構成文藝社會學基礎的關鍵要素，包括歷史、文化與社會政治因素的探討。除了理論研讀之外，課程預計帶入實質的文藝作品分析，以檢驗理論的啟發性與侷限所在。希冀透過社會學詩學與美學理論的深究，得以同時刺激學術思考和文藝創作本身。

This course will use Alan Swingewood's Sociological Poetics and Aesthetic Theory (1987. NY: St.Martin's Press.) as the main reading book, and supplement it with other literary sociology textbooks to examine several major literary theories, aesthetic theories, and cultural theories that outline the possibilities of modern literary sociology. The topics discussed in this semester are divided into two units: In the first unit, there will be a historical review of the development roots of sociological poetics and sociological aesthetics since the 19th century, including positivism, historicism and Marxism, as well as the further development of the sociology of literature and art in contemporary Marxism, formalism, structuralism and literary theory. The second unit will attempt to master the key elements that constitute the foundation of literary sociology, including the discussion of historical, cultural and socio-political factors. In addition to theoretical study, the course is expected to introduce substantial analysis of literary and artistic works to test the inspiration and limitations of the theory. It is hoped that through the in-depth study of sociological poetics and aesthetic theory, it can stimulate academic thinking and literary creation itself at the same time.
