當代的文化研究是許多重要的理論發展的一部份，這些理論包括社會學理論、人類學、馬克思主義、女性主義和語言學、文學理論等。文化研究主要是從1964年代從英國學術圈（批判理論與文學批評）開始發展而出而後在世界學術圈廣傳。文化研究是一門跨學科傾向的學門，因此包含不同的學術取向與研究方法。受到西方馬克思主義的影響，知識份子開始討論工人階級的文化，並從文學評論與文化分析著手進行研究。早期文化研究重要的學者有Raymond Williams、Hoggard、Paul Willis等人，Stuart Hall 則是集大成的文化研究學者。80年代開始，由於英國與美國的新自由、保守主義的興起，文化研究學者以左翼知識份子的角度對右翼主流政黨進行批判。
文化研究主要關注在媒介（medium）如何影響到意識型態、國族、階級、種族、性別等，特別是，意義如何在既有的文化政治與經濟領域中被生產、傳播、擴散、複製。可以說，文化研究主要是分析後現代的學門，也受到後結構主義與後現代主義的影響。
本課程主要目標是引導同學從Raymond Williams的文化「情感結構」的與案例，連結文化研究的理論，著重於批判的思考。「文化研究」課程將分為兩部分討論介紹英國文化研究的發展，第一部分為「當代視覺文化」與「媒體」---透過媒體案例分析的規劃，培養同學對於文化與社會行動的想法，並介紹影像與社會理論、資本主義體制下的媒體、視覺文化理論等。；第二部分為英國文化研究的發展脈絡、理論與流派，以及台灣的文化研究案例。
Contemporary cultural research is part of many important theoretical development, including social theory, humanity, Marxism, feminism and language, literature theory, etc. Cultural research mainly developed from the British academic circle (critical theory and literary criticism) in the 1964 period and was later widely spread in the world academic circle. Cultural research is a trans-scientific and scientific door, so it includes different academic orientations and research methods. Influenced by Western Marxist theory, intellectuals began to discuss worker-level culture and began to conduct research from literary commentary and cultural analysis. Important scholars in early cultural research were Raymond Williams, Hoggard, Paul Willis, etc. Stuart Hall was a culmination of cultural researchers. Since the 1980s, due to the rise of new freedom and conservativeism between Britain and the United States, cultural researchers have criticized the mainstream right-wing political parties from the perspective of left-wing intellectuals.
Cultural research mainly focuses on how media affects ideology, nationality, level, race, gender, etc., especially how meanings are produced, spread, scattered, and copied in the existing cultural and political fields. It can be said that cultural research mainly analyzes postmodern learning, and is also influenced by post-structuralism and post-modernism.
The main purpose of this course is to guide classmates from Raymond Williams' cultural "emotional structure" and cases, link theories of cultural research, and focus on critical thinking. The "Cultural Research" course will be divided into two parts to discuss the development of British cultural research. The first part is "Contemporary Visual Culture" and "Media" - through the planning of media case analysis, cultivate students' ideas on cultural and social activities, and introduce imaging and social theory, media under the capitalist system, visual cultural theory, etc. ;The second part is the development structure, theory and school of British cultural research, as well as cultural research cases in Taiwan.
This course introduces students to the major theories s that underline and are involved in Cultural Studies. In addition to these theories, students will be introduced to key concepts in the field: culture, hegemony, ideology, articulation, discourse, imperialism, globalization, cosmopolitanism, identity, subjectivity, the unconscious, the state,orientalism,and so on. Students are required to write two critical essays, keep a weekly observations journal, conduct two group research projects and participate weekly discussions and complete readings as assigned. Attendance is mandatory.
