This course is designed for students to learn hands-on skills in translation, to deal with the knotty linguistic and stylistic problems, and to bridge cultural gaps in translation, while exploring translation theories relevant to their practical work. This course is project-based; students are required to translate selected materials from English to Mandarin weekly, chosen primarily from their course on Introduction to Fiction.
Within the scope of literature and translation studies, this course is designed to develop students’ ability to analyze literary texts, with the aim of producing their own corresponding translation as well as critiquing other colleagues’ works. All the practice encourages students to question what makes a good translation and to challenge the concept of (un)translatability. This course is designed for students to learn hands-on skills in translation, to deal with the knotty linguistic and stylistic problems, and to bridge cultural gaps in translation, while exploring translation theories relevant to their practical work.
