文學院文創學程既有課程裡與戲劇相關課程包括：戲劇賞析，戲劇創作與戲劇展演三門課。戲劇除了劇本的創作之外，尚包括劇場設計這一個範疇；劇場設計長期以來是劇場藝術裡深受關注的一個創作面向，不僅作為評論一齣劇場演出並存的重要內涵，劇場設計亦可獨立出來成為一個藝術作品，作為一種衍生自劇本、從戲劇延伸而成的藝術創作。例如四年一屆的世界劇場設計展（World Stage Design, WSD），正是關注於「劇場設計師」的藝術家、創作者身份，將其所創作出的「戲劇相關設計」做為展示對象。

開設「戲劇設計」這門課程的初衷，是希望將校內既有的戲劇相關課程做進一步的延伸。東海同時擁有美術、建築、景觀、工設等多個相關設計科系，這些學生除了自己本身專業課程之外，也經常修習文學院各種課程，以之作為豐富思考與自身創作可能的底蘊。戲劇設計希望結合不同科系的學生進行共同創作，將劇本內涵與劇場條件作為課程的知識基礎，進而引導學生以劇本為創作靈感，發展出訴諸於視覺的「戲劇設計」。

課程名稱不直接定位為「劇場設計」而是「戲劇設計」的原因，是希望在進入到專業的劇場設計（舞台設計、服裝設計、燈光設計、技術設計）之前，我們將先從「文字與物件、影像」，「戲劇內容與情境設計」，「空間亦是一種展演」等內涵作為各種創作的可能，讓同學得以在這門課程裡有更多大膽的發想。

本課程將由中文系與美術系老師合授，引導學生從戲劇解讀、劇本創作、何謂劇場等課題入門，並介紹各種可能的創作媒材與表現形式，讓學生在課程最後能創作出實際的「戲劇設計」並進行展出。這些戲劇設計或者作為一種獨立的藝術創作與展演，亦可與其他戲劇課程搭配，作為戲劇演出的實際場景，或者也能開啟校內學生對於未來創作與工作時另一種可能的選項。

The existing courses related to drama in the cultural and creative program of the School of Liberal Arts include three courses: drama appreciation, drama creation and drama performance. In addition to the creation of scripts, drama also includes the category of theater design. Theater design has long been a creative aspect that has attracted much attention in theater art. It not only serves as an important connotation to comment on a theater performance, but theater design can also become an independent work of art, as an artistic creation derived from scripts and extended from drama. For example, the World Stage Design (WSD), held every four years, focuses on the identity of artists and creators of "theater designers" and uses the "drama-related designs" created by them as exhibition objects.

The original intention of offering the course "Drama Design" was to further extend the existing drama-related courses on campus. Donghai also has many related design departments such as fine arts, architecture, landscape, and industrial design. In addition to their own professional courses, these students also often take various courses in the Faculty of Arts as a basis for enriching their thinking and their own creative possibilities. Drama design hopes to combine students from different departments to create jointly, taking the connotation of scripts and theater conditions as the knowledge base of the course, and then guiding students to use scripts as creative inspiration to develop visual "drama design".

The reason why the course name is not directly positioned as "Theatre Design" but "Drama Design" is that we hope that before entering professional theater design (stage design, costume design, lighting design, technical design), we will first start with "text, objects, images", "dramatic content and situation design", "space is also a kind of performance" and other connotations as various creative possibilities, so that students can have more bold ideas in this course.

This course will be taught jointly by teachers from the Chinese Department and the Art Department, guiding students to get started with topics such as drama interpretation, script creation, and what theater is. It will also introduce various possible creative media and forms of expression, so that students can create actual "drama designs" and exhibit them at the end of the course. These drama designs can either be used as an independent artistic creation and performance, or they can be paired with other drama courses as actual scenes for drama performances, or they can also open up another possible option for students on campus for future creation and work.
