伴隨著城市化與現代性的動能及張力，都市理論從早期的芝加哥學派都市社會學發展至今，已有百年的歷史，當中的研究取徑歷經了典範轉移，馬克思主義的批判理論更產生重要影響，如今「都市研究(Urban Studies)」已成為百花激放的基進學術領域，在SSCI的學域分類當中，都市研究亦是一個獨立的範疇，研究能量頗高，除了學術社群規模可觀之外，研究成果也有其實務面的應用價值。
本課程主要分為兩部份，首先，立基於授課者關於台灣與中國大陸的研究基礎，介紹都市研究的重要範式(包括政治經濟學、新都市政治、縉紳化、土地改革等等)，以作為修課者建構研究對象的理論資源；其次，有系統地介紹法國馬克斯主義思想家列斐伏爾(Henri Lefebvri)之「空間的生產」與「三元辯證」的概念體系，並透過探討Anthony Giddens、Pierre Bourdieu及Michael Foucauld這三位較重視空間面向之學者的相關理論概念，進行認識論、本體論層次的「空間轉向(spatial turn)」批判與重構，以彌補社會學界傳統上忽視空間、「去空間(a-spatial)」導致的問題，包括結構—行動之二元對立(structure-agency duality)的缺陷，以期開拓「空間化社會學」的知識活水與新研究取向。
本課程將以授課者講課加上同學導讀討論來進行，教學哲學是清晰易懂(transparency)，依修課同學可負擔的閱讀程度，提供適當教材。參與同學的義務除了出席、課堂導讀、提問和參與討論之外，需繳交期中報告(七千字左右)與期末報告(一萬五千字左右)。
本課程適合對於都市研究、空間的社會研究、政治經濟學以及社會學理論有興趣的同學參與。With the dynamic energy and strength of urbanization and modernity, urban theory has developed from the early Chicago school urban society to the present, with a history of a hundred years. The research in this period has transformed the classical pattern, and the critical theory of Marxism has even had an important impact. Now, "Urban Research (Urban) Studies)" has become the basic academic field of flowers. In the academic classification of SSCI, urban research is also an independent scope, with high research energy. In addition to the affordable academic community scale, research results also have practical application value.
This course is mainly divided into two parts. First, based on the research foundation of the lecturer on Taiwan and Mainland China, it introduces important forms of urban research (including political economy, new urban politics, transformation, land reform, etc.) to serve as a theoretical resource for the study subjects to construct research objects for the trainees; second, systematically introduces the conceptual system of "space production" and "three-way certificate" by French Maxist-themed thinker Henri Lefebvri, and explores Anthony Giddens and Pierre Bourdieu and Michael Foucauld, these three students who focus on space-oriented, criticize and reconstruct the "spatial turn" of the cognitive theory and intrinsic theory, so as to reconcile the problems caused by traditionally ignoring space and "a-spatial" in the social community, including the flaws of structure-activity duality, in order to open up the knowledge and new research orientation of "space-based society".
This course will be conducted with lecturers and student-led reading discussions. Teaching philosophy is transparent and provides appropriate textbooks based on the reading level that students can pay attention to in the course. In addition to attending, class reading, asking and discussing, mid-term report (about 7,000 words) and final report (about 15,000 words) are required to submit.
This course is suitable for students who are interested in urban research, social research in space, political economy and social theory.
