伴隨著城市化與現代性的動能及張力，都市理論從早期的芝加哥學派都市社會學發展至今，已有百年的歷史，當中的研究取徑歷經了典範轉移，馬克思主義的批判理論更產生重要影響，如今「都市研究(Urban Studies)」已成為百花激放的基進學術領域，在SSCI的學域分類當中，都市研究亦是一個獨立的範疇，研究能量頗高，除了學術社群規模可觀之外，研究成果也有其實務面的應用價值。
本課程主要分為兩部份，首先，立基於授課者關於台灣與中國大陸的研究基礎，介紹都市研究的重要範式(包括政治經濟學、新都市政治、縉紳化、土地改革等等)，以作為修課者建構研究對象的理論資源；其次，有系統地介紹法國馬克斯主義思想家列斐伏爾(Henri Lefebvri)之「空間的生產」與「三元辯證」的概念體系，並透過探討Anthony Giddens、Pierre Bourdieu及Michael Foucauld這三位較重視空間面向之學者的相關理論概念，進行認識論、本體論層次的「空間轉向(spatial turn)」批判與重構，以彌補社會學界傳統上忽視空間、「去空間(a-spatial)」導致的問題，包括結構—行動之二元對立(structure-agency duality)的缺陷，以期開拓「空間化社會學」的知識活水與新研究取向。
本課程將以授課者講課加上同學導讀討論來進行，教學哲學是清晰易懂(transparency)，依修課同學可負擔的閱讀程度，提供適當教材。參與同學的義務除了出席、課堂導讀、提問和參與討論之外，需繳交期中報告(七千字左右)與期末報告(一萬五千字左右)。
本課程適合對於都市研究、空間的社會研究、政治經濟學以及社會學理論有興趣的同學參與。

Along with the kinetic energy and tension of urbanization and modernity, urban theory has developed over a hundred years from the early urban sociology of the Chicago School to the present. The research approach has undergone paradigm shifts, and Marxist critical theory has had an important impact. Today, "Urban Studies" Studies) has become a radical academic field that is blooming. Among the academic classifications of SSCI, urban studies is also an independent field with high research energy. In addition to the size of the academic community, the research results also have practical application value.
This course is mainly divided into two parts. First, it introduces the important paradigms of urban research (including political economy, new urban politics, gentrification, land reform, etc.) based on the lecturer's research foundation on Taiwan and Mainland China, so as to serve as a theoretical resource for course students to construct research objects. Secondly, it systematically introduces the conceptual system of "production of space" and "ternary dialectics" of the French Marxist thinker Henri Lefebvri, and discusses Anthony Giddens, Pierre Bourdieu and Michael Foucauld, three scholars who pay more attention to the spatial aspect, use relevant theoretical concepts to criticize and reconstruct the "spatial turn" at the epistemological and ontological levels to make up for the problems caused by the traditional neglect of space and "a-spatial" in sociology, including the shortcomings of the structure-agency duality, in order to open up new knowledge and new research directions for "spatial sociology".
This course will be conducted through lectures by the instructor and guided discussions by classmates. The teaching philosophy is clear and easy to understand (transparency). Appropriate teaching materials will be provided according to the reading level that students can afford. In addition to attending the class, giving lectures, asking questions, and participating in discussions, participating students are required to submit a midterm report (approximately 7,000 words) and a final report (approximately 15,000 words).
This course is suitable for students who are interested in urban studies, social studies of space, political economy and sociological theory.
