The degree of urbanization in the world is increasing day by day, and the importance of urban experience to human society is self-evident. Urban sociology has always been a strong practice of social reform. Along with the history and ideological trends of urban and rural planning, the driving force of urban development in the real world, and the various contradictions that have emerged, urban theory has developed from the early Chicago School to the present. It has a history of nearly a hundred years, and the theoretical orientation of urban sociology has also experienced paradigm shifts. This course is co-taught by the Department of Sociology and the Center for General Studies. It starts from the knowledge base of urban sociology and is concerned with the urban development and residential justice issues in Taichung. It hopes to create an academic discussion platform so that students from different departments can have the opportunity to communicate with each other and think together through the discussion of actual cases in Taichung, so as to sort out their own humanistic and social concerns.
This course will systematically explore the genealogy and research dimensions of important concepts in urban sociology, with specific empirical cases in Taichung, and plan ten themes to provide course students with a foundation of social science knowledge about urbanization and urban development, allowing participants to use this knowledge resource to sort out their own concerns. In addition to the relevant basic concepts taught by the instructor, this course will also have three outdoor teaching sessions, namely Taichung's redistricting area, Old City Central District, and Dongshi.
As an elective course in the Department of Sociology and a dual course in General Studies, this course welcomes students from non-Social Studies backgrounds. Students taking the Sociology Department are required to do introductory readings and question reports in groups (General Studies students are also welcome to join), and choose a specific topic in Taichung. , make a small research report and give a 15-20 minute PPT presentation on stage during the final week. The report topic is customized by the team members. In addition to collecting second-hand information, students are encouraged to conduct field interviews. The report topic does not deviate too much from the course content.
In order to save resources and make it easier for students to read more articles, the textbooks for this course are all available in electronic files and will be posted to the teaching platform for students to download.
