The Modernity of Art

Course Target

A Concise History of Modern Painting (This course is probably a regular version, and the correct version is based on the version of the announcement of the post-school social system website) Modern painting movement has become a very complex and critical change in the history of Western art, including the development of modern spirit different from the classical style, the formation of artistic domain autonomy, and the breaking between the classical and traditional art, all of which were grandly launched on the forum before and after the 19th century. This course will integrate the views of artistic society, and lock in visual art works that have descended from modern Western theory. It will focus on the fields of painting and sculpture, explore the artistic nature of modernism and the modernity of art, including how the art field gradually gains its own independent position in society and the art world, and removes the relationships that have always been associated with other social departments. This autonomy displays the creator's subjectivity and contemporaryity in his works. We will also explore the aesthetics, subjectivity, sociality, and overall modern spirit contained in modern works. The subjectivity of modern theories refers to at least three aspects: 1. The subjectivity of an artist as an individual; 2. The subjectivity of an artist as an independent artist; 3. The subjectivity of an art and art field as an independent domain. If an actor other than an artist is included, the subjectivity of the art can also include the viewpoint of the historian's historical viewpoint and the viewpoint of the artist and his works when the artist criticizes the artist and his works. The school-treatment processed in this period lasted from the eve of Impressionism to the end of the abstract expression theory after the war, and was limited by the number of weeks of the school period and could not match all style schools. In order to understand the basic foundation of the development of modern art history, the main aspects of reading selection, "Appreciation of Western Art" compiled by Shao Dazhen and E.H. Gombrich's classic "Stories of Art" will become the basic materials of artistic history, accompanied by A Concise History of Modern Painting (Modern Painting) written by British artist historian and philosopher Herbert Read (1893-1968) as the textbook. The former clearly provides an artistic history, while the latter focuses on the academic description of modern painting: Read particularly emphasizes the evolution of ideological concepts in the history of modern art, as well as the relationship between the past and later development of art. Even if the author is unable to include or exclude certain artists and painting schools from the work in accordance with the opinions of the subject, these special views and the theoretical basis behind them can form discussion topics in class. The academic community rarely sees established books that are completely in line with the purpose of this subject. Therefore, the reading books and reference books listed in the course are mainly to help students establish relevant knowledge foundations. Teachers will additionally organize and produce PPTs and text lectures from multiple texts. Reading books are not determined by one. The knowledge and discussion content integrated in the classroom will be included in the mid-term/final exam scope. Therefore, students must attend each course, participate in and discuss, and it cannot be done by reading the text by yourself before the exam. In order to cultivate students' thinking and expression skills, the tests are tested in the form of application topics. Students should combine cross-domain thinking such as artistic history, aesthetics, and social sciences to form their own unique insights on artistic works. In addition to the teacher's lectures in class, special lecture activities will also be arranged. The daily performance of students and attendance will be included in the ratings, and the teacher reserves the right to increase the total score of the school year.
