這學期首先要討論洛克批評霍布斯的邏輯不合情理，主張社會契約是要保障，而非限制個人的自然權利。他的論點得到孟德斯鳩呼應。

第二部份要談盧梭與革命反思。盧梭亟言自由可貴，不容他人將其意志強加己身。黑格爾和馬克思都受到他的影響，以融入群體做為體現自由的前提。

第三部份闡述功利主義及其修正，以格林「自由立法」和「社會立法」的正當性探討做為結尾。

This semester we will first discuss Locke's criticism of Hobbes's logic as being unreasonable, and his assertion that the social contract is to protect, rather than restrict, individuals' natural rights. His argument was echoed by Montesquieu.

The second part will talk about Rousseau and revolutionary reflection. Rousseau urged that freedom is precious and does not allow others to impose their will on oneself. Both Hegel and Marx were influenced by him and regarded integration into the group as the prerequisite for freedom.

The third part explains utilitarianism and its modifications, and ends with Green's discussion of the legitimacy of "liberal legislation" and "social legislation".

本課程介紹西洋政治思想的核心與演變。由於思想是瞭解現象的基礎，本課程介紹西方政治思想的歷史發展，期望讓學習者瞭解不同價值，進而產生具有深度的討論。重點在於自由主義，並且就民主政治理論做深入探討。
