Buddhist Epistemology and Practical Issues

教育目標 Course Target

一、課程目標
本課程目標在於提供佛教認識論的基本知識與哲學觀點,同時關照佛教認識論在二諦框架之下的實踐意義,特別聚焦在認識論與世俗際域內因果必然性之要求,以及在實踐以及勝義意義之中對因果必然性要求之「超越」的可能,這特別與當代決定論與自由意志兩者之間相容或不相容之道德哲學議題相關。

二、課程內涵
(1)佛教認識論部分,我們從陳那的因明量論著手,借由陳那在佛教認識論發展中承先啟後奠定佛教新因明的關鍵性貢獻,明瞭佛教認識論當中之主要問題意識。(2)除了掌握陳那認識論系統在佛教內部發展之中所扮演的角色,還嘗試從這之中,汲取回應當代倫理學問題意識的養分。(3)文獻研讀方面,我們透過服部正明的文章,以及《集量論》譯註,掌握陳那認識論之要義,並且從服部正明劃時代的文獻貢獻中,領略原典當中所能展現之佛教認識論特有,活潑充沛的哲學動力。

1. Course Objectives
The goal of this course is to provide the basic knowledge and philosophical perspectives of Buddhist epistemology, while paying attention to the practical significance of Buddhist epistemology within the framework of the Two Truths. It focuses particularly on the requirements of causal inevitability in epistemology and the secular realm, and the possibility of "transcending" the requirements of causal inevitability in both practical and ultimate senses. This is particularly relevant to the contemporary moral philosophy issue of the compatibility or incompatibility between determinism and free will.

2. Course content
(1) In the part of Buddhist epistemology, we start from Chen Na’s theory of cause and effect, and through Chen Na’s key contribution in establishing the new cause and effect of Buddhism in the development of Buddhist epistemology, we understand the main issues in Buddhist epistemology. (2) In addition to grasping the role played by Chen Na’s epistemological system in the internal development of Buddhism, we also try to draw nutrients from it to respond to contemporary ethical issues. (3) In terms of literature study, we can grasp the essence of Chen Na’s epistemology through Masaaki Hattori’s articles and the translation and annotation of “Shuṭṭhāna”, and from Masaaki Hattori’s epoch-making literary contributions, we can appreciate the unique and lively philosophical power of Buddhist epistemology shown in the original texts.
