佛教來自於印度，早期佛教經典大量使用譬喻、寓言、神話、故事，創造豐富的敘事作品，透過故事的宣說，讓聽眾逐步了解佛陀的生平事蹟、佛教基本的教義、儀軌、戒律和隱藏其中的印度文化。後期大乘佛教與傳入漢地的漢傳佛教，也繼承此一傳統，將佛教文化傳播到整個東亞世界。本課程大略區分為佛陀生平、本生故事、外護諸王、出家僧眾、漢地流行故事幾個類別，引導學生了解著名佛典故事的來龍去脈，並以此為媒介來介紹與佛教相關的歷史或傳說人物、佛經的翻譯與分類、佛教哲學的重要概念以及傳入漢地後的佛教文化。學生在本課程中，當能較廣泛的涉獵與佛教文化相關的文獻，熟悉佛典的語言和敘事模式，建立基本的佛教知識基礎，有助於未來認識漢文化在哪些方面受印度與佛教文化的影響。

Buddhism comes from India. Early Buddhist classics made extensive use of metaphors, fables, myths, and stories to create rich narrative works. Through the telling of stories, the audience can gradually understand the life story of the Buddha, the basic teachings, rituals, precepts of Buddhism, and the Indian culture hidden within it. Later Mahayana Buddhism and Han Buddhism introduced to Han Dynasty also inherited this tradition and spread Buddhist culture throughout the East Asian world. This course is roughly divided into several categories: the life of the Buddha, Jataka stories, outer protector kings, monks and monks, and popular stories in the Han Dynasty. It guides students to understand the ins and outs of famous Buddhist stories, and uses this as a medium to introduce historical or legendary figures related to Buddhism, the translation and classification of Buddhist scriptures, important concepts of Buddhist philosophy, and Buddhist culture after it was introduced to the Han Dynasty. In this course, students should be able to extensively browse literature related to Buddhist culture, become familiar with the language and narrative patterns of Buddhist scriptures, and establish a basic foundation of Buddhist knowledge, which will help them understand in the future how Chinese culture is influenced by Indian and Buddhist culture.
