Urban/Rural Community Planning and Design Studio (I)

Course Target

After Taiwan entered the 21st century, a trend of revitalizing old houses emerged in various places. This phenomenon not only presents the nostalgic and romantic imagination of old houses, or the reconstruction of the style of historical districts, but also a problem that arises in Taiwan's process of mass production, mass consumption, and mass abandonment of capitalism in the 20th century. The large amount of idle space and social surplus appearing in various places is not only an issue of urban expansion leading to the decline of old urban areas, but also an economic issue of the commodification of land capital. It also highlights the social and cultural issue of the lack of inheritance and succession between generations. These phenomena and characteristics are all concentrated in the old urban area (Central District) of Taichung City, which has the highest vacancy rate and the highest density of vacant spaces in Taiwan.
This course will lead students beyond the Donghai campus and use the old urban area of Taichung as the site of focus and practice to actually experience and investigate various spatial and social issues formed during the urban development process of Taichung. Teachers will use topic-oriented and action-learning methods to guide students to integrate social resources, propose ideas, and put them into experimental attempts and practices, hoping to accumulate research and creative materials as the basis for sustainable local business development. A team of teachers and students will be stationed in the old urban area of Taichung, organize on-campus communities that care about relevant issues, and combine the resources of local communities and communities in the old urban area to jointly try to solve the problem of the hollowing out of the old urban area due to urban expansion with a restorative urban regeneration perspective and groundbreaking actions.
This course is titled "Medicine Collecting in the City" and selects "Taichung Green Grass Street" and its surrounding "Vietnamese/Indonesian ethnic communities" as the site for research and practice. It explores the new role that traditional Chinese herbal medicine and spice plants with local characteristics may play in modern people's daily lives, reconnecting different ethnic groups, as well as the relationship between people and land, and people and nature, to achieve urban symbiosis. Students in the course will understand the area, communicate and interact with local communities through fieldwork, oral interviews, spatial behavior observation, and holding workshops. They will also integrate research and spatial design to try to propose innovative theoretical perspectives and social practice models.
This course is subsidized by the Ministry of Science and Technology's "Humanities Innovation and Social Practice" program (theme is "Urban Regeneration Action Institute - Urban Regeneration and Social Innovation under the Collaboration of Community and Community"). In addition to the course itself benefiting from cross-field knowledge and resource injection, it will also co-organize work camps with other cross-field social practice teams and jointly hold an exhibition of practical results at the end of the term.
