美國已故人文主義評論家(作家)路易斯孟福德( Lewis Mumford)曾指出: “城市是人類生活進化的縮影, 也是人類文化發展的表徵”. “城市的文化依其歷史, 技術與藝術的呈現決定它的興衰”依此, 要探討一個城市的特色, 可以從觀察這城市的空間是否能給市民在生活上的愉悅去著手.
本課程從”城市的空間應該契合當地人民的生活與文化”的觀點並以紐約市作為探討案例.藉著紐約市的城市特定空間的探討去思考在面對快速變化的都市環境裡,我們想要過什麼樣的城市生活? 如何看待與重建城市與空間使城市更適合我們的生活與文化.並找回城市的文化與生活本質.

The late American humanist critic (writer) Lewis Mumford once pointed out: "Cities are the epitome of the evolution of human life and a symbol of the development of human culture." "The culture of a city determines its rise and fall based on its history, technology and artistic presentation." Accordingly, to explore the characteristics of a city, we can start by observing whether the city's space can give citizens pleasure in life.
This course takes New York City as a case study from the perspective of "urban space should fit the life and culture of local people." Through the discussion of specific urban spaces in New York City, we will think about what kind of urban life we ​​want to live in the face of a rapidly changing urban environment? How to view and reconstruct cities and spaces to make cities more suitable for our lives and culture, and to regain the culture and life essence of the city.
