陳映真是一個思想型的創作者。他的創作生涯從1959年開始跨越了將近半個世紀。他的作品以深刻的思想作底，試圖透過文學來直面這個時代及其重要問題，但又經常超越了特定的時代與地域的限制，從而揭示了更深刻的跨越地域與時代的意義。陳映真的小說創作不是「文學為了文學」所能窮盡其意義的，因為它糾結著歷史、社會與思想。閱讀陳映真創作，對本課程而言，至少有一個企圖：透過小說家所提供的視角，對戰後台灣以及區域的歷史、社會與思想，展開一種具有新的敏銳度的探索。

這門課將利用作家陳映真跨越五十年的文學創作作為第一手資料。上課之前，充分地細緻地慢慢地閱讀，並記下你的心得（而非小說故事大綱）或困思不得，是這門課的首要要求。每位參與者上課前寫就一份字數不限的心得筆記，以備討論、發言與之後的寫作。本學期沒有考試，只有一篇學期報告，於期末（1月8日）下午五點前繳交一篇8000字以內的學期報告到我的系辦信箱。報告題目是「我所理解的陳映真思想的核心主題」。之前，每位同學將於12月18日口頭報告該論文。

Chen Yingzhen is an ideological creator. His creative career spanned nearly half a century starting in 1959. His works are based on profound thoughts, trying to face this era and its important issues directly through literature, but they often transcend the limitations of a specific era and region, thus revealing a deeper meaning that spans regions and eras. Chen Yingzhen's novel creation cannot exhaust its significance by "literature for literature's sake" because it is entangled with history, society and thought. Reading Chen Yingzhen's works has at least one intention for this course: to explore with new sensitivity the history, society and thought of post-war Taiwan and the region through the perspective provided by the novelist.

This course will use author Chen Yingzhen’s literary creation spanning fifty years as primary source material. Before class, read carefully and slowly, and write down your feelings (rather than the novel's synopsis) or ruminations. This is the first requirement for this class. Each participant writes a note of any number of words before class to prepare for discussions, speeches, and subsequent writing. There are no exams this semester, only one semester report. Please submit a semester report within 8,000 words to my department mailbox before 5:00 pm at the end of the semester (January 8). The title of the report is "What I Understand as the Core Theme of Chen Yingzhen's Thoughts." Previously, each student will give an oral report on the paper on December 18.
