The Independent Study course allows each student to work on a project of her own interest that may be turned into a research topic for a thesis. Each student will focus on an area that she is interested in and will engage in researching, assessing, summarizing, integrating, and synthesizing essential literature on the chosen topic. Students will meet regularly with the professor in order that their progress be monitored and their projects advised. At regular intervals over the semester students will present progress reports for discussion with other students in the class. At the end of the semester students will develop and write an extended research essay, or have developed a chapter or chapters toward, and an outline for, an MA in Literature thesis.
