The purpose of this course is to make students more effective and confident readers. In particular, the instructor will provide students with high-interest readings on academic subjects and teach them skills and strategies for effective reading, vocabulary building, note-taking, and critical thinking. The course also encourages students to discuss and write about the ideas they discover in the readings.

This 3-credit course provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn and practice effective English language skills as well as sophisticated strategies for job hunting and career planning. Senior students in the job application process will find this course particularly beneficial. The course introduces problems frequently encountered by job seekers and analyzes big companies′ recruitment processes. Students taking this class can prepare themselves for career success via various skills that are covered in the course, including real & fake jobs verification, connecting with head hunters, self-promoting strategies, English resume and cover letter writing, recruitment process, job interviews preparation, salary negotiation strategies, and solutions for struggling careers. The students will be immersed in an English-only learning context full of effective hands-on activities such as mock interviews and teacher-student writing conferences to gain work-related experience as well as confidence in using English to prepare for their professional development.
