The primary objective of this course is to help students meet the English Exit Requirement in Tunghai University. This course will provide various activities to enhance students' English abilities, especially in reading and listening. Training in speaking and writing will also be offered in this course.
Prerequisites:
1) Students are required to complete the course of Freshman English for Non-majors (two semesters) before they can enroll in this course.
2) Those who have taken TOEIC, GEPT, or other related tests, but did not reach a satisfactory score, would have the priority to take this course.
3) Senior or junior students would have the priority to take this course.

This 2-credit course is designed to enhance students′ English listening and reading abilities and skills emphasizing English use in general and academic contexts. The main goal in listening is to enhance students’ listening comprehension ability through maximizing their opportunities to listen to English with different accents and in different voices. Students will listen to English as the medium of instruction and effective audio/visual materials such as CDs, DVDs, and online videos to comprehend English about a variety of topics. The main goal in reading is to enhance students′ reading comprehension ability through maximizing their opportunities to use basic reading skills such as skimming, scanning, reading for main ideas, inferring, and guessing vocabulary from context. Students will learn and apply these skills to academic and other texts that have clear thesis statements, body paragraphs with topic sentences and supporting details, and conclusions to comprehend English about a variety of topics.
