Taught in English
Intellectuals’ Images
Course Target
Intellectuals with ideal flames burning in their hearts are always motivated by the enthusiasm to burn all old habits and create new life when faced with the vulgarity, depravity and rottenness of real life. However, the real social structure-political power, economic power, and human bonds, like kudzu, is constantly crawling all over the body. It is far larger, more complex and heavier than they naively imagined. When confronting this thick and ever-growing vine, the flame of ideas will inevitably turn back and burn itself. Under the scorching flames, where should the intellectuals go? This is the problem that this course is concerned with and attempts to answer.
This course mainly outlines the dilemmas faced by intellectuals and their response methods by reading classical, modern and even so-called postmodern literature (and) works: when they encounter many obstacles from worldly interests, either from politics, economics, or even the system itself, so that the ideas cannot be implemented, how do they face the ensuing depression, anger, frustration, and sense of emptiness, and even what actions they will take to respond to life challenges that even their full knowledge cannot handle. In addition, through group discussions, students are asked to observe and think about real-life phenomena: In the era of the so-called knowledge/information explosion and the popularization of higher education, how can we be called intellectuals? If absorbing and producing knowledge are ravaged by the aforementioned difficulties and are neither sacred nor elegant, then how much meaning and value can there be in pursuing knowledge production and becoming intellectuals?
