This course gives students a thorough review of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, in preparation for the study of calculus. The foundation of the course is a study of functions and their properties. The course content is evenly divided between computation (the algebraic solution of equations and inequalities) and visualization techniques (the graphical representation of functions). The first half of the course covers polynomials. Using linear and quadratic equations, we model solutions to various real-world problems. From this foundation, we launch an exploration of higher-order polynomials and rational functions. In the process, we define fundamental concepts (e.g., function domain, range, intercepts, and symmetry) needed to graph curves in two-dimensional coordinate space.
We begin the second half of the course by briefly reviewing the properties of trigonometric and transcendental functions and applying them to problems in business and the sciences.
The course ends with a study of two challenging topics: conic sections and linear systems.
